I originally purchased this car back in 1992 outside Philadelphia,
PA. for the paltry sum of $3000.00. That is where the car sat, in
storage, until I was able to have it shipped out here to sunny
Tucson, Arizona. It is a numbers matching SJ with the original
XF code 428/370 horse motor. It retains the original 3.23
safe-t-track rear, and the M-40 auto transmission. It has 65,000
original miles and has had no body work that I can detect. I am
only the third owner and have all the documentation for the car
including the protect-o-plate.
Once I got the car out here and started to drive it, the usual
issues reared their ugly heads. The front crankshaft seal started
to leak as well as the rear main seal. I decided to sell my
sportbike and fix my GP up right. My good friend and expert
mechanic was kind enough to help me with the project. The motor
was pulled and disassembled. The heads are casting #46. These are
not original to the car, but are dated January 7, 1969. I
determined that the original heads, 62 or 16, had been replaced
probably under warranty when the car was fairly new.
The heads were treated to a 3 angle valve job, new springs, new valve
guides, and hardened valve seats. The original cam which was well
worn out, was replaced with a Summit 2802, 224/234. The following
parts were also replaced: rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, oil pump,
fuel pump, water pump, timing chain upgraded to double roller, fan
clutch, radiator, distributor, belts, hoses, plugs, wires, all
gaskets and seals, main bearings. The original Rochester Q-jet is
still intact, also treated to a rebuild. The original pistons and
rings as well as the crank were all in fine shape and were left
intact.
Helping it all breathe are a set of Hedman Headers running into a
2.5 inch exhaust system with 40 series Flowmasters. It now rides
on BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on the orignal Rally II wheels.
The car runs great now and I love how it all came out. I don't
really see that many Grand Prix's around and I like having a car
other than the most popular ones. I plan on enjoying it for many
years to come.
