RETURN

Tuesday in practice we discussed strategy for this weekend. Here is what was covered.

We reviewed the possibility that the teams may play a box and 1 against dimitri. 4 players in a 2-2 zone. The other player covers dimitri wherever he goes. We have three set offenses when this happens:
Greg will yell ‘Box motion’ and he can actually run motion by passing away from Dimitri and setting a screen for him so he can get the ball.
Dimitri can bring the ball up himself as the point guard.
Greg yelling ‘fist’ means Dimitri will start at the wing and cut down the lane past you or the slider for a screen and he will come back up on the other side wing getting another screen from the other wing.
All three of these options are designed to allow Dimitri to get more touches and more opportunities for shots. Be aware that he will be looking to drive to the basket, so when he gets the ball, you should step away from him but be in position to bail him out if he draws a double team or at least be ready to get an offensive rebound.

We spent 20 minutes running zig zag drills with an emphasis on making the offensive player miserable. Your defense should be as annoying as you have ever been. Get right up on your defender, jab your hands constantly distracting him. Try an occasional hand check just so he knows you are right there. This will be very frustrating to each player on offense.
We spent another 15 minutes running what was the hamburger drill last year. The defensive player’s job was to beat the offensive player to a spot to take an offensive foul. During last weeks game, I saw too many times where we didn’t run to a spot to beat the offensive player driving to the basket. Not only that, we want you to beat any player to a spot coming into your zone area whether he has the ball or not. But certainly when you see a guard driving to the basket, you need to step in his path before he gets close to the basket. We need to be more active than we have ever been before.
Lastly, we are going to play a little 1-3-1 defense which we haven’t done all year. It’s almost like a half court press. These final two teams have bigger players and the 1-3-1 is perfect for that because a defensive player is basically covering the big player at the top of the foul line and not letting him catch the ball. The two wing defenders stay close enough to the offensive wing players who may be in the corners. The one player out front, forces the ball handler to take a side and guides him into his wing defender for a double team. I’ll go over this with you on the clip board before the game.
If the weather holds up, shoot some baskets, triple threat, drive to the basket, drop step. If the weather turns bad, in the house….Dribble the ball, hold the ball while watching tv. Basically walk around the house with a ball in your hands as much as possible for the next 3 days. Dribble it, fake shoot with it in the house. Do those ball drills we did last year. Around the back, around each leg, cris/cross between your legs. All things that will make you very comfortable with the ball this weekend.
